FAQ

Joining ARTWV@groups.yahoo.com

ARTWV is an e-mail list that was created in 1997 by a few West Virginia artists who wanted to communicate with each other via e-mail on topics related to arts & crafts. In the beginning, we started by copying each others addresses in our personal address books. The list started growing until it became too hard to keep up on a personal computer. So, we moved the list to the free e-mail server Yahoo groups. Now we have one e-mail address that sends messages to every member of ARTWV! Now life is a lot easier and there is more time to be creative! Artists who are new to the art & craft world are encouraged to join the list and may benefit from the knowledge of the more seasoned professionals. ARTWV is a place to post comments, seek opinions, share sources for supplies, discuss or announce shows, fairs and exhibits and basically talk about any topic related to arts. Moderator for ARTWV is Kenneth D. Westfall.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.  Will I start getting junk mail if I give my address to Yahoo groups in order to join ARTWV?
A.   No.  Yahoo Groups has an anti-spam policy.  Your e-mail address is only used to sign up to the lists you are joining.
Also, if you are caught joining lists just so you can send junk mail to that list, you will be banned from Yahoo groups.
The moderator of the list can also manually ban the offensive party from sending messages.

Q.  What is a moderator?
A.   A moderator is usually the owner of the list or someone put in charge to run the list.
The moderator(s) have control of adding members and can control other aspects of the list.
The moderators for ARTWV is Ken Westfall.

Q.  Do I have to go to a web site to read and send ARTWV e-mail?
A.   No. You send and receive ARTWV e-mail through whatever e-mail client you presently use.
The only exception are members that use an online service such as hotmail and have signed up to
      ARTWV using that e-mail address.

Q.  I heard Yahoo groups attaches advertisements to each e-mail, is this true?
A.   Yes.  Yahoo groups is a free e-mail service and attaches a banner ad to the bottom of each message.
They try to attach advertisements that relate to the list. So ARTWV would have ads attached that relate to
       art & craft.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q.  Does it cost anything to join the ARTWV list?
A.   No Yahoo groups is a free e-mail service.  ARTWV is not a guild or a club that requires dues.
ARTWV is an e-mail list that was created in 1997 by a few WV artists wanting to connect via e-mail
      to share information.

Q.  How do I know only WV artists will be able to join the e-mail list, what keeps just anyone from joining?
A.   The moderator of ARTWV must approve all requests to join and then add the person to the list.
ARTWV requests a member profile before they will be added to the list.  Although people could lie and send in a false profile, I don't foresee this being a problem. If anyone is caught sending a false profile, they will be banned from the list.   The URL to the ARTWV private page will also be changed to a new address to prevent future access by the offender.

Q.  What is a member profile?
A.   A member profile is information about you that lets the moderator of ARTWV know you are a WV artist so you can be be added to the e-mail list.  Your profile will be added to the other member profiles and will be available only to ARTWV members.

Q.  What information does my member profile need to contain?
A.   Send your name, e-mail address, which county you live in, your medium and mention if your involved with
Tamarack.  List if you belong to any art guilds or organizations.  If you have a Web Site list the URL.
You may list your phone number if you wish, it is not REQUIRED!

Q.  Can you give an example of a member profile?
A.   Yes. Here is a listing as an example.
       *EXAMPLE:
PATTY McCARTY- (One-of-a-kind Santa Dolls) MARION CO./ Tamarack Advisory Board 1997-
Marion Co. Rep. for Tamarack/ Designer's Craft Guild
       E-Mail: elf@mountainelves.com
       URL: http://www.mountainelves.com
       Phone: (optional) 363-0922

Q.  I would like to join ARTWV but I only have e-mail, I don't have access to the internet,
      can I still join?

A.   Yes.  You can e-mail the moderators and ask us to add you to ARTWV.
       We can add you manually.
If you are not a previous member with ARTWV and do not have a member profile on file,
you MUST send us your profile before we manually add you to the list.

Q.  What is the difference between being manually added to ARTWV and going to "http://groups.yahoo.com/">Yahoo groups's web site          to join?
A.  * By going to the web site and signing up you will have a password.
You will then be able to access the other areas of ARTWV that Yahoo groups provides.
You will be able to unsubscribe from this mailing list, change your subscription to digest, or add bookmarks
to a special page for ARTWV that Yahoo groups provides.

      * You do not have these options if  we added you manually.  You should only ask us to add you manually if you do not have internet access or you don't care about the extra options.
You will also have to e-mail us if you want removed from the list.

Q.  I asked you manually add me to the list, now I want to sign up with Yahoo groups.  What do I do?
A.   Go to Yahoo groups and sign up.  Use the e-mail address we used to manually add you.
Pick a password.  You should then be able to access ARTWV from Yahoo groups.

Q.  I signed up for ARTWV at the Yahoo groups Web Site.  How do I access my account?
A.   Go to the Yahoo Groups  web site, at Yahoo groups and select the Member Center link from the menu bar
on the left.  Don't forget to type in your e-mail address and password.
You will see you are subscribed to ARTWV.
Click on ARTWV and all your options will be there, including the bookmark page.

Q.  OK.  I signed up for ARTWV and still can't send or receive e-mail, why?
A.   There are a few possibilities.
      1.  The moderator(s) of ARTWV didn't receive a member profile from you!  We will not add you to ARTWV
           until we receive a profile.

      2.  You didn't reply to the confirmation message you were sent by Yahoo groups!
If you signed up at the Yahoo groups web site, you will receive a confirmation message by e-mail,
you will be asked to hit reply to confirm you signed up for ARTWV.
           * If you asked us to manually add you and you didn't sign up at Yahoo groups's web site, you will not receive a
confirmation message, you are automatically added to the list.

      3.  The moderator(s) are out of town and haven't added you to the list yet.
If we know the dates when both of us will not be available to add  members, we will post the dates on
           the Join ARTWV webpage.

      4.  You incorrectly typed your e-mail address when you subscribed. Although we should be able to catch it
when you send us your profile with your e-mail address.  Unless you have it incorrect there too!
E-mail us if you are not getting any mail from ARTWV and we will check it out.

      5.  Yahoo groups happened to be performing an upgrade the day you signed up.
Although this doesn't happen often it does happen.
Again, e-mail us and the address you signed up with and I'll check it out.

Q.  OK, I'm ready to join, and I know some other artists who might want to join ARTWV. Where do we         go?
A.   Go to:  Join ARTWV
Pass along this address to other artist you think may want to join.
       * DO NOT SPAM others with this address!!  If you are found doing so, you will be removed from ARTWV!
You may post this URL to newsgroups only when it is appropriate to do so!
If you are not sure it is appropriate, then inform people you know of a e-mail list for WV Artists and if anyone         is interested,  they can e-mail you for the URL to join.

       * You can also e-mail the moderators to manually add you to the list.
Do not ask the moderators to manually add other people.
They must personally e-mail us and send us their profile.

Q.  I have a question that is not answered in the FAQ, what do I do?
A.   You can e-mail the moderators any questions at  ARTWV.  Ken will answer them
as soon as possible.   Who knows, we may even add it to the FAQ page!
